German to English translations [PRO] Cinema, Film, TV, Drama
German term or phrase:Verantwortlicher Redakteur
I don't have a sentence to post as context, as this term is part of the information provided on the cover sheet of a documentary film exposé, among stuff like "Produzent", "Regie", "Drehbuch" etc. I am proofreading the exposé, and the translator wrote "Commissioning Editor". I am not all too sure about that, as "editor" in English filmmaking equals the "Cutter" or "Schnitt" in German. And this person will never actually touch the editing machines... In essence, what the Redakteur at a TV station does is to commission a documentary from an external production company. He is neither there for the filming, nor during the editing. In essence he approves the concept for production, grants a budget, and monitors the whole process. He then gets to see the rough cut, sometimes along with other people from the TV station, and will suggest/demand changes. This can go on for several rounds of editing, until the cut is approved for broadcasting... So what would people in such a position be called at an English TV station?
Explanation: The person meant here (I'm assuming the film is a coproduction with TV) would be the one at a broadcaster in charge of coproducing this specific film.
In US television, the person would more likely have the title "Producer", but "Commissioning Editor" is more common in Europe.
Thanks everybody! Unfortunately I cannot split the points, as both answers seem to be in essence correct, depending on the country. But as my text has to be British English and the original translator already wrote "Commissioning editor", which proved to be OK, I chose this answer as "most helpful". 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer
