Cinema, Film, TV, Drama / Film Location Contract
German term or phrase: Abfilmen
"Die Nutzung der Tiere des Safariparks für Aufnahmen ist jeweils vorab mit dem Motivgeber abzustimmen und umfasst insbesondere:

- Das ***Abfilmen*** aller im Tierpark täglich ablaufenden Vorgänge, wie z.B. die medizinische Behandlung der Tiere, die Neuankunft oder Geburt von Tieren;

- Einsatz der Tiere des Tierparks für dramaturgische Szenen"

From a film location contract. The location is a safari park.

I don't understand the "Ab" part of Abfilmen. I simply cannot detect any meaning in it. Does it mean the same as "Filmen" or is there some subtle difference? TIA for your help.

Wenjer Leuschel: 4:08am Jul 12, 2004: Hi Rowan, this is a good question. I would like to know the answer, too.
We got "filmen," "verfilmen" and "abfilmen."
We got as well "handeln," "verhandeln" and "abhandeln."
Usually, we don't have problems have them, but... -
Wenjer Leuschel: 4:21am Jul 12, 2004: Sorry. I mean, we don't usually have problems with those words, but they may confuse a little. For instance, "nehmen," "vernehmen," "entnehmen," "aufnehmen" and "abnehmen." Are they basically the same? Can we say "Auffilmen" instead of "Abfilmen"? -
margarete: 4:24am Jul 12, 2004: Nope Wenjer: "auffilmen" does not exist :-) -
Wenjer Leuschel: 5:53am Jul 12, 2004: For sure, Ariane, I was just making fun of German language. ;o) -

filming/recording
Explanation:
"Abfilmen" is essentially the same as filming, but it has the connotation of recording in the sense of that it is done on purpose.
As in "kopieren/abkopieren" etc...

In your case it is required to obtain permission to film/record/tape employees in the park as they are perfoming their daily duties.

Hope this makes sense

I think I can explain it even better:

The reason they are using \"Abfilmen\" here is that it is in contrast to the second bullet point:

- using the animals for filming dramatic scenes

\"Abfilmen\" is simply pointing the camera at something that is happening without actually directing the action.

It is for example also used when people make illegal dubs of films with a camcorder in the movie theater:

I agree with Johanna - that was a great explanation, and certainly worthy of being awarded four KudoZ points, which it is my great pleasure to do on this occasion. Thank you very much indeed for that, Ariane, and thanks to the peer graders for their useful input. Thanks also to Mario for his idea. Appreciate everyone's help.

make cinematic recording

Explanation:
A slightly more formal term;

Abfilmen in English would be a word similar to "depict"
For some reason the prefix here is Romance, not Germanic

abfilmen i.e. recording "from"
verfilmen => make (story/book) "into" a movie

In Swedish we have basically the same prefix nuances as in German, though not as many
