"Der unerwartete Mauerbau 1961 hatte den Gegenwartsstoff plötzlich zu einem historischen gemacht und ihm ungeahnte Brisanz verliehen"
'Gegenwartsstoff' here referring to contemporary plots in GDR filmmaking. Can't find a clever way of rendering "Brisanz"... explosive/controversial nature?
