Yes, in hindsight I guess you're right, it is about PLCs. Unfortunately I can't see a way of changing the domain, although sometimes the ProZ admins do see fit to make changes as they see fit, even after the question has been answered.

I probably would have chosen a different domain (probably industrial), as strictly speaking the Simatic S7 is not a computer in the generally accepted sense of the word, but a programmable logic controller (PLC), and your text seems be documentation for a specific application.

When the machine is in trouble/requires operator attention, it emits - is programmed to emit - a godawful racket. By canceling the acoustic signal, we say that the operator "acknowledges" the error. Presumably after "Quittierung" the operator will clear the problem and continue the cycle, reset the cycle or tell the machine to continue. All this, of course, is mediated by the S7.
