Asker: I don't think layout quite covers it, the text also refers to "Deckelgliederung". I think it's basically just the design of the lid, although design crops up so often, I'd like to avoid using it yet again.

Reference information:
Gliederung does seem to be a synonym for Struktur as used in your text. If you are looking for alternative words to structure and design, then contoured might be a possibility. The following links might give you some ideas - Panasonic refer to the idea of making the lid of a laptop look like the bonnet of a car in order to achieve strength and a lightweight, attractive design.
