Das Übertragungsprotokoll des World Wide Web (Hypertext Transfer Protocol, HTTP) ist von Natur aus verbindungslos. In der Praxis bedeutet das, daß sofort nach der Übertragung eines Dokuments die Verbindung zwischen Web-Browser und Web-Server abgebaut wird. Sind in ein Dokument weitere Dokumente eingebettet, etwa Bilder in einem Text, oder folgt der Anwender einem Hyperlink, so wird für jedes dieser Dokumente wiederum eine neue Verbindung zum Server auf- und ***abgebaut***.
