German term or phrase:beim Auflegen
Bit-Monitoring
Jeder sendende Knoten prüft sofort beim Auflegen des Bits, ob die gesendete Information auch dem Ist-Zustand am Bus entspricht. Sollte dieser nicht den gewünschten Pegel aufwei-sen, so wird vom Sender der laufende Übertragungsvorgang eingestellt und ein Error-Frame gesendet.
Explanation: On a CAN bus, bit monitoring refers to the mechanism by which nodes (devices), upon sending a message, transmit a dominant or recessive bit and monitor the subsequent level/state (="Pegel", that is, 0 or 1) of the bus to which all the nodes are connected. An error frame is generated if a collision of the two is detected, triggering retransmission of the message from the node that originally sent the recessive bit, etc.
The whole mechanism is used for arbitration/prioritization, i.e. making sure the most important signal gets through with no delay. That is because CAN is used in cars, aeronautics, etc. which have real time requirements, i.e. it is crucial that there is no delay whatsoever in the transmission/processing of mission critical signals.
NB In German, there is the unwritten but otherwise rather strong stylistic rule that one should avoid close repetition of identical words; this often works on the unconscious level and IMHO is the most likely reason why the author of the above sentence was in a "desperate" need of a synonym, creating this non-standard and awkward term.

... the correct word would be "to replicate", "to transceive" or maybe "retransmit"; both former words easily lend themselves to mistranslation, e.g. by a software engineer having German as his native language :-) And it follows from the first of your sentences that "auflegen" must be very closely related to "senden".
In certain network technologies, such as in the widespread CAN bus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAN_bus#Technology
individual nodes ("hosts") connected to the bus may be configured as transceivers, with built-in error correction/recovery. Or in other topologies, a "node" may "replicate" the "master", a "volume" or or certain "objects".
But as I said, the details depend on the concrete technology. However I'm quite sure that "auflegen" is a botched/ad hoc translation into German, not a "proper" term.
... the type of bus they're talking about here; this piece of context would be most helpful in determining what the "auflegen" thing is all about. -- Thanks.
