German term or phrase: Kopfzerbrechen
The sentence is :

" So lustig diese Anekdoten toenen, so stark bereiten sie den Verantwortlichen Kopfzerbrechen. Was soll man tun ?"

My translation is :

" As funny as these anecdotes sound, those in positions of responsibility had to wrack their brains. What's to be done ?"

I cannot think of any other equivalent than " wrack their brains". Does it work in this context? Does anyone have any other ideas or suggestions? Thank you in advance :)

create a headache for/cause real concern for

Explanation:
Is the sense not more along the lines of "as funny as these anecdotes sound, they create a real headache/cause real concern for those in charge"? Rather than the people in charge having to wrack their brains?
