Yes, German is very handy that way. You can pull apart just about any word to figure out its meaning. A good example of how useful this is within a specific technical context is the example "Standort", i.e. "place" where something "stands". We all know that "standing place" is not a standard term for "Standort" and yet if we apply your principle, this is what we get. If someone posted a query, for example, asking about "Standort" I would say, based on my "experience in this field" (as stated in my query above), that "Standort" is normally translated as "site" or "location" or "position" depending on the context, of course, rather than offering a way to decipher the meaning of the term.
