German to English translations [PRO] Tech/Engineering - Construction / Civil Engineering / Safety testing of materials and building methods
German term or phrase:Menschengedränge
This text speaks of "Menschengegdränge" in terms of DIN 4103-1. Which deals with permissible loads on railings and partition walls.
Does anyone know the official term used in the English translation of the regulation, and thus save me having to pay €37 or so to buy a pdf copy of the document?
Explanation: There are two installation areas for walls depending on the crowd
density. Areas with a normal private use have a small crowd density,
for example apartments, hotels, offices, hospitals and corridors.
Areas with the risk of high impact loads have a large crowd density,
for example meeting places, educational places, lecture halls,
exhibition areas, salesrooms and sports arenas.
*Installation areas: 1 normal crowd density, e.g. houses, hotels, offices, sick rooms and hallways
2 high crowd density, e.g. assembly rooms, classrooms, auditoriums, showrooms and salesrooms

I suspect you might be right about something like "human crush" in relation the DIN 1055-3 standard, but in this context I think Kim gets the cigar. It's about intensity of use of built spaces and has precisely the two levels Kim outlines.
Menschengedränge as such is a "throng [of people]". Then there is "maximum occupancy" (of certain premises), but here I think is meant the force a crowd will exert against a railing etc. That is called "crush of people" (like has happened in soccer arenas when the crowd surges forward pressing against the railing, with those at the lower end of the terrace being crushed to death).
Would that not be the "restraint factor" of a wall or railing or 'strength coefficient' to make it sound more technical?
Thanks for the info. It contains some other stuff that might be useful, but low and high gatherings are not right. Though it leads me towards "low or high concentrations" rather than the more physical "human crush" that I seem to find in the glossaries.
"low gatherings of people" and "high gatherings of people" is used in connection with DIN 4103-1. So the term you're looking for would be "high ...". Sounds "denglish" even to me ;-)
I forgot to mention that the term is used in another context in DIN 1055-3, where it needs to be understood differently, according to the people who wrote the text I'm translating.

crowding of people
Explanation: The document speaks of two kinds of crowding of people
- normal
- high
in installation areas.
Page 16 contains a chart according to DIN 4103-1. The term 'crowding of people' is used (and constantly throughout the document).
