" 'Man ist jede zweite Woche heim gegangen in die Kirche. Jeden 2. Sonntag haben wir uns abgewechselt, ein paar sind ***auf den einzelnen Ebenen geblieben***. Am Sonntagnachmittag hat man dann die Verpflegung wieder mit hinauf mitgenommen, ein Brot und was man so gebraucht hat.' "

Very interesting account of life in the Austrian Alps around the 1930s. I don't understand what is meant by "auf den einzelnen Ebenen geblieben". Is the idea that some people did their own thing and didn't go to church or something? TIA for your assistance.
