German to English translations [PRO] Marketing - Cooking / Culinary / Buffet menu | | German term or phrase: Badische Festtagssuppe | Does anyone know what this is? I can find lots of examples of it on menus, but no recipes to give me any clues! Whilst I'm happy to leave the name in German, it would be good to put a brief explanation in brackets if anyone can enlighten me.
The whole menu line is:
Edelfischbouillion oder Badische Festtagssuppe mit Grünkern
Many thanks |
| | Clarification request(s) and responseSteffen Walter: 10:58am Jun 7, 2007: Not that I am able to come up with an English term but http://www.restaurant-elke.de/Speisekarten/karte_vorschlaege... lists the "Badische Festtagssuppe" as a "Fleischbrühe mit Kräuterlädle, Griessklößchen und Eierstich". Steffen Walter: 10:59am Jun 7, 2007: ... where Kräuterlädle is most probably a typo for KräuterFlädle. Stephen Sadie: 11:05am Jun 7, 2007: This may help: Rezept, Consomme Double Gärtnerin mit Grießklößchen. Rezept, Corn-Chowder (Suppentopf mit Mais) .... Rezept, Festtagssuppe mit Markklößchen und Kräutern ...

Jonathan MacKerron: 11:14am Jun 7, 2007: Aldi also sells Festtagsuppe in a can Claire Cox: 11:35am Jun 7, 2007: Thanks for the recipt link, Stephen - so it is another sort of consommé.
Jonathan: I haven't been in a branch of Aldi for years, athough as a student in Böblingen many moons ago, we seemed to do all our shopping there. I know they're in the UK now, but my only experience in these German cut-price supermarkets over here was in Lidl - and involved a two-second glance and then a very sharp exit! Craig Meulen: 12:10pm Jun 7, 2007: We're on the right track, but different regions have their own "Festtagssuppe", so make sure you've the right recipe! My ex-parents-in-law served a version when I met them, and stumped me with the Q "Wie heisst Eierstich auf Englisch?" :-( Jonathan MacKerron: 8:33am Jun 8, 2007: but isn't a consomme a clear broth? A Festtagssuppe has all sorts of things in it. Claire Cox: 8:42am Jun 8, 2007: As far as I can work it out from the recipe, the basic liquid is clear, even though it has things in it, so I think you could say it was a consommé as they're often served with various garnishes. It does go on to say it's served with Grünkern.... Stephen Sadie: 9:35am Jun 8, 2007: Dear Claire, I HOPE you didn't write Bavarian!!! Claire Cox: 11:12am Jun 8, 2007: @ Stephen: No I must have had a momentary aberration! Must have been thinking about the Creme Bavaroise in the dessert section!

| Note from asker to answererMany thanks to everyone for all your help and links. In the end I left the German, merely adding Bavarian consommé in brackets. As the menu was already for a gala buffet, I felt that adding "festive" would have been superfluous. 3 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer |
