German term or phrase: 4 gestrichene EL Mondamin
from recipe for Black Forest Gateau. I think EL Mondamin is a form of Speisestärke. Unclear about the "4 gestrichene" .

Many thanks - I've slightly amended this by omitting "Mondamin" as English readers would oribably not be familiar wih this.

-> yes thanks! should have listed both. it's one of the lovely differences between UK and US.

agree  Cetacea: with corn starch/ corn flour rather than the brand name.

agree  BrigitteHilgner: With Claire. In some parts of the globe, "Hoover" means vacuum cleaner, and in Germany (not in Austria) Mondamin means cornflour.

-> no, it shouldn't be used outside of Germany. some countries use Maïzena in the same way.

agree  Anja Neudert: with Brigitte, I would not mention the brand name

-> no, it's meaningless outside of Germany.

agree  Patricia Will: Yes, corn starch or cornflour, depending on target audience

agree  BirgitBerlin: I wouldn't mention the brand name either, unless it's for a recipe on the packet ;-) but we weren't told!
