German term or phrase: System der komunizierenden Röhren
Der Löweanteil des deutschen Kapitalexports fließt, wenig spektakulär, über das System der komunizierenden Röhren der Minanzkapitalmärkte.

- could this just be a metaphor? Could I just say "The majority of German capital exports flow through capital markets"? Or is there an equivalent metaphor in English? I found an experiment about "communicating vessels" but wasn't sure this would fit.

system of interconnecting channels
Explanation:
I think "channels" feels more natural in English and is certainly seen in this sort of context in the financial columns of UK newspapers.

communicating tubes

Explanation:
Why not use this expression? It's quite common.

interconnected system [of pipes]

Explanation:
Personally I would leave the "of pipes" out of it; it does look like a technical metaphor, but in my view it doesn't really work in English.
