German to English translations [PRO] Social Sciences - Education / Pedagogy / Education Research | | German term or phrase: Ansatz | SNF-Ansatz Doktorierende 2. Jahr
This is from a letter from the Swiss Research Commission at the Universiry of Zurich. It concerns a research fellowship. There are many entries in the glossaries for 'Ansatz' but I'm still not sure what it meant here. 'Recognition' is one glossary entry. Could that apply here? i.e. SNF-Recognition Second Year Doctorate? |
| | Clarification request(s) and responseVictor Dewsbery: 10:16am Jun 30, 2005: Who or what is the SNF? Is it a funding body, a qualification, an academic institution, an abbreviation of a subject combination? - Shane London (asker): 10:37am Jun 30, 2005: Hello Victor. SNF is the Swiss National Science Foundation. I meant to include that in my question and forgot. Shane London (asker): 1:23am Jul 2, 2005: Thanks for that link, Deborah. The link worked for me. I see there is a list of Stipendienansätze for 2003 on jpg file. That makes 'rate' seem the most likely translation for 'Ansatz' at the moment. Shane London (asker): 1:24am Jul 2, 2005: I should say 'Rate or 'Pay Scale' as you suggested.

| Ansatz (in this context) contingent
Explanation: Could be a contingent of sponsored research fellowships.
Or it could be a research programme which offers research topics and funding.
To be certain, we need to know in what form the SNF supports the research.
I don't think it is recognition (the research work carried out would need to be recognised by the university itself).
As you imply in your comment, "Ansatz" is one of those dreadful words that can mean anything or nothing.
