German term or phrase: 'Vom ist zum Soll' Methode
A method used in vocational education:

Any ideas on what to call this in English? Something along the lines of 'Achieving targets' method????

'From where we are to where we want to be'
Explanation:
I realise this might not work in every context; however, I would translate the sentence in question as follows:

The question of how to get from where we are to where we want to be has led to new possible courses of action and behaviours being developed.

agree  Jutta Scherer: Sounds great; just two change suggestions: 1) I would put the question in quotation marks because the "we" is not used in the rest of the text); 2) present perfect does not work here - it should be: The question ... will enable participants to develop...

  -> Good point, Jutta. It may, therefore, be even better to say: The question of how to bridge the gap between 'where we are now' and 'where we want to be' will enable...

Contrasting how things are with how things could be

Explanation:
The method as I see it is aimed at individual students, not the group as a whole ("we").

Example sentence(s):
  • The participants are asked to write down how they see their present situation and how they envisage it might change for them by writing key terms on cards "How things are" and "How things could be".

Note to reference poster
Asker: I know, it's more a term for an equivalent method in English that I am looking for. It may be something completely removed from 'target and actual situation'. Thanks anyway!
