I've chosen this one from these many opportunities since my 'linguistic intuition' tells me that this could be appropriate, maybe just as the others too. Thank's to everyone!

to study exhaustively

Explanation:
In this context, umwälzen means to study exhaustively as a teaching material, since the publication has stopped since 2007 by the writer. Languages evolve, but like Shakespeare or other famous writers whose works are not available anymore, people use them for teaching materials to study exhaustively the grammar, syntax, writing styles, usage of words, etc. during that certain period or age.

disagree  Tessa Pfenninger: I'm not convinced, but to give a more useful opinion I need to know what the omissions (brackets) are. I suspect that what the writer is saying is that in storytelling all these text elements interact/appear ... /are demonstrated

change/circulate/revolutionize/recycle

Explanation:
Ich verstehe es auch als "aendern/veraendern".
Kindlicher Wortschatz unterliegt kontinuierlcher Veraenderung, das wuerde also hier gut passen.

I also like to recycle, since old things are turned into new things.

overthrow

Explanation:
another possibility instead of "revolutionize" - that is how I understand it given the sparse context.

recycle

Explanation:

Spot! Spot is a dog!")

overturn

Explanation:
