German to English translations [PRO] Social Sciences - Education / Pedagogy
German term or phrase:Fakultätsverwaltung
Comes up in several instances in a questionnaire for N. American universities and colleges, e.g. in the aim of the study:
"Arbeitsziel: Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten in der Arbeitsweise von Leitungen von Fakultäten und Fakultätsverwaltungen aus der ganzen Welt zu identifizieren."
I have "academic department administration", but sounds rather awkward. I'm trying to avoid the word "faculty" to denote an academic department/school, given the US context.

You're both right, although the use of Faculty for academic department is nowadays nearly always reserved to Arts and Sciences, perhaps a hold-over from yesteryear. I know Harvard has a "Faculty of Arts and Sciences", but according to its own website it is called a "division" in administrative terms.
I am sure you know the US so much better than I ever will. Somehow I worked for forty years for something called the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Maybe right now the place has seceded? Just the same ...
I beg to differ. In USA, faculty means academic staff members, not school. "College or Arts and Sciences" or "Graduate School of Arts and Sciences", depending on the level, would work in the USA. In Canada, your translation would be ok, though, at least in Quebec for sure:).

I don't think you could say academic division administration, but possibly divisional administration, or perhaps some sort of workaround? The problem with academic department, for the UK at least, is that faculties are divided into departments, e.g. Faculty of Arts, Department of German. Faculties are very occasionally referred to as divisions, e.g. University of Oxford There are four academic divisions within the University, and the divisional administrations for each of these form part of the Academic Administration Division. http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/ac-div/aboutus/divisionaloffices/

Explanation: Why not simply use "university"? or "college" or even "institutions of higher education". All that works in the US. "Faculty" works for Canada as well, but you're right, it's better to avoid it in the strict US context. In the US, the primary meaning of it is university professors.
"administrative" or "governing bodies" would work, too.

I changed "administration" to "administrators" to allow for the above term, which is a familiar one in US English and should convey the German meaning just fine.
I understand you don't want to repeat the term, but since it does repeat itself in the original German as well, it wouldn't be a stretch at all to just call it "faculty administrations".
