Is an Arbeitszeugnis for an apprenticeship from the business where someone was apprenticed a work certificate or a letter of reference? I need the term for a certified translation.

nterim performance review - it is supposed to be a neutral list of tasks performed, more than a recommendation

I only meant that since Zwischenzeugnis was described to me by a German native speaker as "a neutral list of tasks performed, more than a recommendation," I was therefore not 100% sure that "letter of reference" (since that is a recommendation) would be correct for Arbeitzeugnis. But I think the others who discussed this make it clear.

Asker: I'm not sure I understood you correctly. Is this what you mean: Zwischenzeugnis = interim performance review, therefore Arbeitszeugnis = letter of reference ? The contents of this particular Arbeitszeugnis is a bit of both: a list of tasks performed as well as positive assessment of the person's abilities.

agree  jccantrell: I would probably pick this one. In the USA, you get a letter of reference (to be shown to future possible employers) that usually just states that you worked for Company X from time Y through Z. It does not say anything that could cause legal problems.
