German term or phrase: Vordiplomzeugnis
Following on from my previous questions ("Fachhochschule", "Diplom-Vorprüfungszeugnis"), who can help me with an accepted translation of this term? More important to me perhaps than the translation itself, what - if any - is the difference between a Vordiplomzeugnis and a Diplom-Vorprüfungszeugnis?

That would at least be an approximation (but you'd need to mention the fact that the course of study leads to a "Diplom" degree elsewhere).

As a German student, you\'d usually take the Vordiplomprüfungen half-way through your studies (after your second year if it\'s a four-year curriculum).

agree  Erik Macki: Another option would be to use the German word, set in italics, followed by a footnote with Steffen's explanation. In the U.S. this certificate may be roughly equivalent to an associate's or bachelor's, assuming the full Diplom is like a master's.

  -> Agree with your reasoning. A Fachhochschuldiplom is usually obtained in a 4-yr curriculum, which gets relatively close to a Master's degree.
