I think I'm just getting fried on this. Can anyone help me sort out the first sentence especially.

The project tests the possibility of making up for a *training abschluss* with web-based learning. The goal of the project is to offer new groups of participants a way to the Abitur.

gain qualifications as a mature student
Explanation:
What you do with Bildungsabschluß will depend on who your audience is - it's clear from the following sentence that it means Abitur, so you can keep that term if your readers are going to know it, or else reword it in terms that will make sense to your readers.

I think something to do with mature students would capture the idea of nachholen - doing the exams at a later time than is usual. In the UK you don't have to be that old to be classed as a mature student!
