(Apologies in advance for proving mostly translated text. I am working from a faxed orginal and don't have time to retype quotes).

From a patent application for "a guidewire for medical applications, in which the wire core is the sole element that determines rigidity, whilst the core covering is formed from several thin, concentrated layers of alternating, electricity-insulating and electrically-conductive material. "

In one of the further developments of the invention, "the proximal front end of the core envelope is installed on a proximal end-section of the wire core, with the *Ringschulter* of an electrically isolated ring proximal being inserted axially in between. (Lit. "(...unter Zwischenfügung eines elektrisch isoliernden Rings axial gegen eine *Ringschulter*).

agree  xxxblomguib: if it's from a patent, I would definitely go for "annular shoulder"...no interpretation possible
