From publication of a patent for a guidewire for invasive medical instruments (using the English translation as background).

"The guidewire s includes a wire core 1 and a core envelope 2. Wire core 1 extends from distal end area 3 to distal end area 4, whereby it tapers with a conical junction area 1a from a proximal larger diameter to a proximal smaller external diameter into distal end section 1b. The core envelope 2 likewise extends from proximal end area 3 to distal end area 4 of the guidewire, and is formed by a division into two parts, rigidity tube 2a and envelope spring 2b connected to it. Rigidity tube 2a extends from proximal guidewire end area 3 via the predominantly *schaftbildende* length of the guidewire."
