Explanation: With a device like the conductivity-based level detectors described in the first reference cited below, a continuity-test or continuity verification resistor (with a corresponding resistance) may be desirable to provide protection against an open circuit fault condition (Drahtbruch), since the resistance measured or shown by the device can be practically infinite under certain operating conditions and it may be important to be able to distinguish this operational state from an open-circuit (abnormal) condition. With a continuity test resistor, the upper limit of the resistance seen under normal conditions is set by the resistor and a significantly higher (i.e. infinite) resistance indicates an open-circuit fault.

To be fair, 'continuity test' and 'continuity verification' don't google especially well in this context, although this is the purpose of the resistor in this case. You might consider using 'terminating resistor' (perhaps with the additional information 'for continuity verification').
Hi Kim - No, I don't - I have Wernicke's Dictionary of Electronics, Communications and Electrical Engineering and a raft of glossaries from various clients, including Siemens. Do you recommend it?
Explanation: Hi Claire - the reason I asked about Siemens is I'm not an expert in electronics and didn't want to suggest something from a dictionary you might already have. For Drahtbruch, Siemens gives wire breakage and open circuit. Drahtbruch-Kontrollwiderstand is line continuity supervisory resistor.
