Heute dienen Vorverstärker vornehmlich dazu: Signalquellen anzuwählen, die Lautstärke zu regulieren, die Kanäle auszugleichen, wegen der Kapazitäten von Kabeln Impedanzanpassungen vorzunehmen und notfalls den Klang zu regulieren. Der Begriff, Vorverstärker, ist folglich nicht mehr ganz treffend, was insbesondere daran deutlich wird, dass es sogar vollkommen ***passiv aufgebaute*** "Vorverstärker" gibt.
