German term or phrase: gelernte Beleuchtungsstärke
still struggling with this same sentence (see question on 'bedingt', asked yesterday...):

Der Rotanteil am Abend bedingt eine ** gelernte Beleuchtungsstärke ** – ist diese zu hoch wird das Licht als unangenehm empfunden

What DOES the first half mean? How can you 'learn' an intensity of illumination? And how can the red content of the evening sky require or cause it??!!

If I translate the sentence as 'The content of red in the evening sky causes a 'learned' intensity of illumination' - it means nothing to me!

Help!

habitual light immission

Explanation:
A paraphrase using "accustomed" might be better, and then there are phrases like "acquired" sensitivity that also might suggest an improved version?

(the selection of) an appropriate intensity of illumination from the settings stored/saved in memory

Explanation:
Der Rotanteil ... bedingt eine gelernte Beleuchtungsstärke
the proportion of red color ... requires (the selection of) an appropriate intensity of illumination from the settings stored/saved in memory

A tentative answer suggestion, pending phoeberuth's response to my discussion box request ("It would help to know what the overall text is about and the situation in which the sentence occurs. Are we into photography or imaging science or some some piece of equipment, maybe?")

'Lernen' here suggests 'to commit to memory', 'to memorize'. Pending more context, I presume for the time being that the 'Beleuchtungsstärke' settings are stored in memory somewhere on the camera/equipment and (the selection of) a suitable level/intensity of illumination is required to match the proportion of red color.

Thank you, phoeberuth, for posting the additional context in the discussion box.
Lux is is the SI unit of illuminance, so Beleuchtungsstärke = illuminance

(optics) The density of the luminous flux on a surface. Also known as illumination; luminous flux density.

So, 'Illuminance' and 'illumination' can be used interchangeably.

My fresh suggestion:

Der Rotanteil ... bedingt eine gelernte Beleuchtungsstärke

the proportion of red color ... requires that the amount of illumination is suitably adjusted (in response), based on experience

The amount of illumination (in lux) is measured at the center of the chart using a light meter.

agree  orla: think the last suggestion is getting closer to it! The red light requires a specific level of illumination to be perceived as pleasant...[As we have learned.../from experience]
