would have been the correct wording.
When I hear the word durchhängender (in this context) I can very well imagine what it looks like - namely: start and end point are roughly the same but the connecting curve/line will 'sag' more than the original one. It's like a clothes line with dry and wet clothes on it which will sag more in the latter case but the line will still run from post top to post top. Tilt/rotate that sagging line and that's what it looks like (in my opinion).

There is a further reference to this in the document I am translating:

Bei einem "High Fogging"-Betrieb eines Axialkompressors ist der Druckaufbau allgemein umso durchhängend, je mehr Wasser eingesprüht wird".

Do you not think that this implies that if enough water was injected the pressure would not build up to its intended level at all? I am still not sure about this, and cannot see why "durchhangend" has been used.

would imply that the overall pressure build-up through the whole compressor would be slower, which in my opinion only holds true for the front part. The final pressure (point/value) when entering the turbine section must roughly still be the same as for dry compression. Compared to a linear/normal pressure rise the curve will be more shallow at the beginning and steeper at the end.

I have read certain papers on this subject which are available on Google and, as you say, it appears that the temperature change in the compressor, due to increased water injection, causes the pressure build-up to be shifted towards the end of the compressor. So, in simple terms, does "durchhängend" simply mean slower, or progressively slower (as per Opolt's suggestion), the more water is injected into the compressor?

this is about a slow pressure rise in the first stages leaving all the work/load to the latter ones. 'Smooth and gentle' would only apply for the entry section.

... this refers to the curve describing the pressure rise, so I would go for the opposite of "steep" (as in "steep learning curve") or "aggressive", such as "gentler", "smoother", "more gradual". You can also "translate" the metaphor yourself and talk about a "slower pressure takeoff/build-up" or something similar.

"Sluggish" sounds a bit too strong and too concrete to me, but I'm not a native speaker of E ...
