Clarification request(s) and response
Christine Lam (asker): 2:53pm Aug 29, 2004: This is referring to a road (road closures and construction of the 'Ausweichstrecke'). It is probably more than a temporary measure, I am assuming that this is a permanent road or lane of some kind

alternative route
Explanation:
One possibility.

escape lane (area)

Explanation:
I think there's not quite enough context to tell... If it is talking about a road and a place to go in the event of an avalanche, it could be "escape lane". If it is for skiers, then you might say "escape area", though that is not a set term. The Canadian glossary below might be helpful in general, with many road and weather terms including "avalanche deflector mounds", for example.

(After the asker\'s explanation): How about \"emergency route\" or \"snow emergency route\" then? Alternative route is ok, but to me it doesn\'t imply an avalanche. The above glossary also includes \"detour\", implying something non-permanent.
