Bus/Financial - Finance (general) / pricing models
German term or phrase: abschöpfen
'Die in Abbildung 91 dargestellten Konzepte waren auf vier verschiedene Kundensegmente abgestimmt und ermöglichten es so, die Zahlungsbereitschaften optimal abzuschöpfen.'

my idea were 'to take advantage of...' Syphon off just doesn't work with this noun.

The subject is a financial book on pricing models in retail and investment banking.

The suggestions from the previous kudoz listing on this don't seem to help given its more literal usage in that context.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

leverage
Explanation:
A US-ism that has undeniably made its mark on big business in the UK, especially in the financial and IT sectors.

It is vague, and can mean to use, to squeeze or to optimise.

URL is just one example.

Asker: Thanks - I know the word from my days in big business. I am surprised it is not used as a loan word. The text is full of management speak of this ilk so it would fit within the style. Thanks.

with a definition, I couldn't copy it at the other site (where you have to scroll down several screens)

http://www.answers.com/topic/skim-pricing

skim pricing ((definition taken from Barron's))
Establishing a relatively high price for a product or service; also called high-price strategy. This usually works for product innovations with limited competition and a low or negative price elasticity of demand. Skim pricing enables the seller to more rapidly recover the costs of development and introduction. This strategy carries some risk in that it will attract more competitors to the market and may antagonize consumers. A skim pricing strategy also works well with prestige products such as perfume. See also low-price strategy; prestige pricing.

I am not very sure you can use leverage in this context. Leverage means "the power to influence". For example, if UK is the biggest buyer of say commodity "X", then it can influence the world prices due to its enarmous purchasing power for that commodity "X". In other words UK can leverage world prices on account of its buying capacity for commodity "X".

I am not sure whether "leverage" can fit in here

UK can leverage its position as the world's largest buyer of commodity "X" to influence world prices.
