German to English translations [PRO] Art/Literary - Folklore / Mythological text | | German term or phrase: Hasengeier | I came across "Hasengeier" in a text describing Turkmenistan mythology. I am a native German speaker, and acquainted with this term (an animal I believe to be native only to Europe/Central Asia), but what could the English translation be? Any ideas? How have you all handled non-native animal species names before, that is, if you COULDN'T find a direct translation?
Thanks in advance! |

| Clarification request(s) and responsexxxFrancis Lee: 9:52am Jan 22, 2007: Are you asking this question just out of personal interest? mieder: 5:05pm Jan 22, 2007: Actually, it came up in a text I'm working on.
It does seem as if "Hasengeier" is an older variant of the term "Steinadler" - the previous answer was quite helpful. xxxFrancis Lee: 5:39pm Jan 22, 2007: OK, I only asked because you stressed the fact that you're a native German speaker. What's the context/readership? mieder: 6:45pm Jan 22, 2007: This text is a translation (GER>ENG) of a museum's website. It talks about Turkmenian culture and mythology, the context being Turkmen rugs and rug artistry. Hence, readership would be museum-goers, and I think a print version of this (rather large) text is in planning as well.
I think the problem is that the term comes up in an portion of the text that is quoted - so I guess I should expect a few more antiquated terms of this sort.
