German term or phrase:Konditorei
im Bäckerei-und Konditorei-Gewerbe
in the baking and confectionery industry
bakery and pastry trade?
Confectionery to me means sweets and icing sugar - Konditorei produces gateaux and cream cakes
or am I all wrong?
nothing sounds quite right....
Thanks for any suggestions
I Dont't really know what to add - I have specified that I am referring to the industry or trade and not a shop - the text is written by a supplier to the trade or industry- I quite like baking and patisserie industry as pastry seems to bland for what I think of as Konditoreiwaren
Thanks for all your help!
..is the title of a famous music hall song and refers to the café-type place suggested in two of the answers. However, our source refers IMO to the trade where one learns how to make the things sold in the café and the baker's shop - i.e. bread, pastries on the one hand and gateaux and cakes on the other, alternatively to the retailing of such products (see Kim's entry).
Asker, before you decide what to use, please give us some more context and wait for more votes/suggestions !
Anne-Marie - I decided to use patisserie as it says more to me than just pastry, but can not award points as you have only mentioned it in discussion and not as asuggested answer! Thanks anyway
A Patisserie produces cakes and tarts, a Konditorei produces candy and sweets. Both terms are used in German only, although Patisserie is probably borrowed from French.

pastry shop, dessert cafe, tea room
Explanation: A KONDITOREI normally specializes in backed pastries and fruit and cream torts, with the possibility of consuming these on the premises, usually with coffee, tea or cocoa available to drink, as distinct from a BAECKEREI in which bread (sometimes with other ingredients such as a sweet glaze or fruit baked in, but more typically with savory ingredients such as sausage or bacon bits) in various forms to go/carry out is on offer. A KONDITOREI is usually a place to linger, with at least a standing bar, and usually tables and chairs, whereas a BAECKEREI is a busy establishment in which the clientelle are encouraged to place and pay for an order and then to leave, making way for the next customer.
Example sentence(s):
In der Hamelner Baeckerstrasse befindet sich das Stadtcafe, eine Konditorei worin Kunden sich zum zweiten Fruehstueck, Nachmittagskaffee oder Nachtisch treffen koennen.
