Hello - again from the list of furniture pieces this company produces (Sofas, Ecksofas, Hocker, etc). Any ideas?

Thanks very much!

Hilary.

IZE: 7:01pm Oct 15, 2006: I like to add to my comment:
“Ausgleichsstück” is a fitting part – a common thing in many areas (furniture, engineering, ….)

Maybe a corner of the sofa for 'recreational sports' ;-)

But seriously, would it be too far-fetched a use of the word 'Ausgleich' to signify a place where one can curl up with a mug of Horlicks, stroke a cat and read a Mills & Boon romance?

thank you very much! I asked the client for further clarification, and it IS in fact the corner section which "bridges" the gap between couches placed in an L-shape. I carefully avoided any references to the recreational possibilities offered by such a piece of furniture in my translation, but feel free to allow your imagination free rein here ;-)

agree BrigitteHilgner: I agree with your translation, but definitely not with your suggestion what to do in that corner. :-)

agree Armorel Young: Boringly, though, don't you think it might be Ausgleichs- in the dull but necessary sense of just being something to ausgleichen the hole you get if you put 2 ordinary sofas at right-angles?

-> Yes, Armorel. I agree any reference here to Mills & Boon would be a high-risk strategy. It’s a ‘unit’, it goes in the ‘corner’. Any additional description would be pure speculation.

agree IZE: „Ausgleich“ in this term has nothing to do with recreational sports – it means a corner unit is available to adjust (~“ausgleichen”) the sofa to different situations - the corner unit is probably available in different dimensions.

agree Hildegard Klein-Bodenheimer: with Armorel. The term is mostly used in kitchens, see http://www.nolte-kuechen.de/fileadmin/pdf/typenuebersicht.pd...
