Given the exact context, I have a feeling it refers here to a description of what was found when they excavated rather than any "monuments/exhibitions" (e.g. the Moorleichen in Schleswig, Pyramids, etc.) I'd say artefacts would be a safe form of circumlocution without straying too far.
