Maurite Fober (asker): 3:34am Jul 25, 2004: Do you know whether it is particular to a certain type of institution or organisation? Sorry, I should have asked this in the main question as this is really what I'd like to know, but it's my first question and I'm still getting to know the ropes. Thanks for your replies so far. Ann C Sherwin: 11:23am Jul 25, 2004: See my reply to your query about the Verkaufs-Schwester. It would help to know the locality and time period. I suppressed my initial answer to this query because it was the same as Christine's, submitted at almost the same time. - Maurite Fober (asker): 12:58am Aug 2, 2004: Thanks... - ... to all for your responses - it was the need to fit it into a historical context that had me stumped.
Explanation: Mention of the diaspora (and Schwestern in your other query) led me to the Moravians. The headmistress or principal of a school was called a Vorgesetzte on several Web sites about Moravians, including the one I've given. Also Heath's German-English/English-German dictionary (1888) gives "principal" as a translation of "Vorgesetzte."
Thank you very much, Ann! You are indeed right; this was about Moravians and and I'm grateful for your very astute insight/instincts on both this and the other question. 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer
