caught the bug

Explanation:
Depending on the formality of the document (context !), you could say he "caught the bug" of whatever subject he was studying.

Or, more formally, "the infectuous mood" caused him to improve.

Various other idioms:

catch the fever
get bitten by the {subject} bug (math bug, computer bug, knitting bug,...)
get caught up it the mood

agree Courtney Sliwinski: My first thought was "got caught in the moment", very similar to "caught in the mood"
1 hr

agree Kim H: I think your last suggestion of "caught up in" sounds most natural, "he got caught up in the positive mood (or atmosphere)".

agree David Seycek: perhaps even “...got caught up in the contagious atmoshpere of the seminar”

infected by

Explanation:
... the positive energy etc.

Example sentence(s):
  • I also think that you can be infected by the energy of the project, which is good.
  • We arrived in the City of God on Saturday, and have already been infected by the energy associated with the cities inhabitants - known as Cariocas.

Explanation:
I suggest you change the metaphor as catching things is usually to do with hobbies one gets passionate about and not schoolwork!

Peer comments on this answer (and responses from the answerer)
agree Textklick: Some of the spelling above is atrocious. IMO "inspiration" is over the top within the context, as are the medical references. Target market UK or USA?
