German term or phrase:zu einer Messe
Sorry if this is a bit obvious but I am translating something about a picture which is sold off at auction and I am being a bit dense about this phrase. Here is the context:
"Die Bilder wurden zu einer Messe in den Vereinigten Staaten ausgefuehrt"
The text is about whether VAT should be charged because the picture has been exported outside the EU but I cannot undestand why it would be exported "zu einer Messe". The picture has been exported at a trade fair??? It cannot be, can it? Don't you exhibit valuable pictures in galleries and not at trade fairs?
Thank you for your feedback. Just one of the pictures went to the Messe (I just changed it from Eines der beiden Bilder to save time) and the reason why I posted the query was that in my ignorance it did not cross my mind that it could be anything other than a trade fair. I just could not see a valuable picture being sold off at a Messe - I thought it would have to be at auction or in a gallery. Of course it must be a Kunstmesse - dopey old me
Not quite sure I see the problem - there are all sorts of fairs: antique fairs, art fairs and so on. Seems fairly plausible that the pictures have been sent to some sort of fair in the hope of finding a buyer.
