German term or phrase: Da die von ihm postulierten Leute hinter den Kulissen
Another non-PRO question from a non-pro who is trying to edit a translated text to the best of my ability....

This was translated as "...since the people he postulated behind the scenes..."

But you can't really postulate someone. I see the German verb can mean both "postulate" and "posit." How about something, like "the people he posited were behind the scenes"? I'm tempted to go with "the people he said were behind the scenes" as I think that most clearly gets the point across, but I want to stay true to the original also. Help? Thanks!

Here's the full context:

"Da die von ihm postulierten Leute hinter den Kulissen jedoch ebenso unsichtbar blieben wie die "Geheimen Oberen" der Golden Dawn und die Mahatmas der Theosophie, wurde er damit de facto zum Chef der Wicca-Bewegung."

agree  Helen Shiner: Since the people he alleged to be behind the scenes [giving him permission to initiate]. My answer is perhaps a bit different to yours.

-> Thank you, Helen. But I think efreitag is right.

disagree  efreitag: No, "hinter den Kulissen" does not specify "postulieren", but the location where those people remained invisible.
27 mins
-> Ach so! Das hatte ich falsch verstanden. Die von ihm vorgeschlagenen Leute blieben ...

agree  Kim Metzger: Given the discussion, 'alleged' makes sense.

-> Thank you, Kim. I really don't know what to think anymore.

agree  Cilan: yep, with some slight corrections concerning structure...

agree  Annett Kottek: With Helen: 'Since the people he alleged to be behind the scenes’, and then maybe continue ‘remained as invisible as the “Secret Chiefs” of the Golden Dawn [...], Gardener himself assumed leadership of the Wicca movement.'

neutral  Helen Shiner: Funny, it is not really clear, but I understand the ones behind the scenes to be those giving permission, ie other potential 'chiefs' of this outfit. Since they don't appear, he gets the top job by default.//Could be both sets of people actually.
9 mins
-> I understand 'postulierten Leute' to refer to the new members the older members supposedly allowed him to initiate.

Reference information:
Are you sure really you can't postulate someone/something?

Apart from that, the sentence is grouped differently: "He" postulated people. These people remained invisible behind the scenes.

"Are you really sure", of course.

I'll try it: "Since the people he postulated remained invisible behind the scenes just like the "Geheimen Oberen" did..."

neutral  Helen Shiner: He claimed they were there or just plain made them up? Posit would, I think, mean that he placed them there (behind the scenes). Not sure whether to agree or disagree here, since I wonder whether the GER means something a bit different to 'to postulate'.
50 mins
-> I see. I shouldn't have tried a translation and only explain instead. The German no doubt (!) says that those people exist (which in a sophisticated manner is "postulieren" in German). And those people remained invisible behind the scenes.
neutral  Susanne Rindlisbacher: Dass sie existieren, ist mMn nicht gesagt. Dass er sagt, dass sie exisieren, dagegen schon.
