German term or phrase: schneiden und theilen
This phrase comes from a 19th-century letter, written by an elderly immigrant in the U.S. She is writing to her brother and reminiscing about their wonderful childhood, miserable marriages, and lonely old age: "Ach ja, solange alle um uns sein, u. vier schneiden u. theilen, ist oft die Plage viel, u. jetzt, wo sind alle 9ne? Fort. Weg. Zuletzt noch in Gedanken, die den süßen Schlaf rauben, u. wir wälzen uns im Bette hin und her..."

divide and share

Explanation:
Or simply "cut and share". This is a hunch, from an old custom my father sometimes referred to, where one person cuts the portions and the other(s) take their share, for fairness' sake. Just to get the ball rolling...
