in Fraktur or black letter? In that case "ll" would look close to "ss" indeed. Also, "T"could indeed be misread as "J". "Rather than letting the humble abode of diligence and virtue fall into disrepair"?

Agree with Kim, LegalTrans and Coqueiro said. And are you sure it is meant to be 'Jugend'? If I read Kim's link correctly, it says 'Tugend' there.

Tegan, reading over this entence again and again, I get this seat-of-the-pant feeling that there must be a (typing) error and that this sentence ought to read, "Laufendmal eher alle ihre Anlagen verfallen zu lassen, als dass die Hütte des Fleisses und der Jugend *verfalle*"....That would make a lot more sense, don't you think? Is this 19th century? And what sort of copy did the client provide?
