neutral David Moore: "Outcrossing" (see below) is seldom "random", IMO - as a one-time dog-breeder

agree David Moore: In this context, I'd use this term; "outcrossing" on its own is used in breeding domestic animals for deliberate introduction of specifically desired characteristics into e.g. a "line" of dogs.
