German term or phrase: Nord-Suedausbreitung
Hello all,
This is a geography text:

"Aufgrund seiner Nord- Südausbreitung hat Japan verschiedene Klimazonen." I'm having a mental block - how would you express the Nord-Suedausbreitung in English? I can't even think of a workaround at the moment!

Thanks very much!

Clarification request(s) and response
Teresa Reinhardt: 7:08pm Mar 30, 2006: The german is a little strange, -erstreckung would be more appropriate since this is about length, not width. I think the words 'long/length' need to be included since they are making a point her: lots of zones (if Japan were turned 90 degrees (-ausbreit
-
Teresa Reinhardt: 7:09pm Mar 30, 2006: ung), it might have only one zone.) -

longitudinal range/spread from north to south

neutral Teresa Reinhardt: No, this here refers to the fact that the country is _long_ in a N-S direction

-> If you look at the reference, they're making exactly the same point - that if you turned the Americas on their side there wouldn't be as much climatic variation

extends...from N to S

Explanation:
The above is only a placeholder (not allowed to use "siehe unten" anymore)
I'd work around it - something like 'since the principal extension [of the country] is N-S" (very technical [geometry] term; see www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/LPSC99/pdf/1697.pdf )
or, more colloquially, "Since Japan extends mostly in a N-S direction"
