frontal system Explanation: for a diagram see: http://www.meteoschweiz.ch/de/Wissen/Rekorde/lawinen1999.sht... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 19 mins (2005-03-23 14:13:05 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- frontal system—Simply, a system of fronts as they appear on a synoptic chart. This is used for 1) a continuous front and its characteristics along its entire extent, including its warm, cold, stationary, and occluded sectors, its variations of intensity, and any frontal cyclones along it; and 2) the orientation and nature of the fronts within the circulation of a frontal cyclone. http://amsglossary.allenpress.com/glossary/search?id=frontal... |

orographic uplift? Explanation: Muret-Sanders gives barrier effect for Staulage, but I can't find anything in Google that would confirm that translation. In Europa treten typische Stauniederschläge im Alpenbereich auf, ferner am deutschen Mittelgebirge oder in Norwegen (regenreiche Westküste, regenarmes Südnorwegen). http://www.austrocontrol.co.at/weather/lexfull.html Barrier jet: a jet-like wind current that forms when a stably-stratified low-level airflow approaches a mountain barrier and turns to the left to blow parallel to the longitudinal axis of the barrier. http://www.geog.ubc.ca/courses/geog102/Resources/G102Glossar... Orographic uplift - The lifting of air over a topographic barrier. Clouds that form in this lifting process are called orographic clouds. http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/ams/glossary.html Occasionally an air mass will travel eastward from the Pacific, and experience orographic uplift. The air mass on the other side of the mountain range is significantly different than the original air mass, and is simply called Pacific air. http://www.valdosta.edu/~grissino/geog3150/lecture16.htm Front - In meteorology, generally, the interface or transition zone between two air masses of different density. Since the temperature distribution is the most important regulator of the atmosphere density, a front almost invariably separates air masses of different temperature. When warmer air replaces the colder, it is a warm front, and a front is a cold one when the opposite occurs. http://nsidc.org/arcticmet/glossary/front.html |
