This is from an article on the construction of the A71 describing subterranean cavities in the "Erdfallgebiet" near Erfurt. Google, LEO and other online dictionaries have *depression* or *sinkhole* for "Erdfall".
"Depression area" sounds strange (at least to my German ears). Would "sinkhole area" be better?
As I'm not an expert in geology, I would welcome your expert confirmation/suggestions. :-)

Sinkhole is correct. Syn. doline. So I would call an "Erdfallgebiet" a sinkhole area or region or an area subject to or susceptible to sinkholes, etc. |

| Note from asker to answererThanks a lot, Alan. I should have "wikied" for Erdfall instead of Erdfallgebiet. Clicking on the "English" link in the German article takes you right to the English article on "sinkholes" and "dolines". ;-)
