Tech/Engineering - Geology
German term or phrase: gewachsen
Hi,

I am not sure if "gewachsen" means "mature, evolved" or something more subject-specific here. The source is a report of an investigation of a contaminated site.

Der süßliche Geruch des Auffüllungsmateriales (Vinylchlorid) setzt sich in den gewachsenen Bodenschichten fort.

Thank you.

Peer comments on this answer (and responses from the answerer)
disagree LittleBalu: Sorry, but not in this context, Maureen. gewachsen = as is, natural, untouched. // Added: You probably meant "überwachsen".

underlying/lower

Explanation:
Difficult to find an exact match, but
"...into the underlying geological layers/strata...."
would appear to convey the correct meaning.

Peer comments on this answer (and responses from the answerer)
disagree LittleBalu: Sorry, Tim, but not in this context. Underlying or lower = darunter liegend, not necessarily gewachsen.
