German to English translations [PRO]
Science - Geology / Core drilling
German term or phrase: Wacker
Context:

I suspect the term "Wacker" may actually be a bastardisation of the English "whacker", but haven't yet found any evidence to confirm this suspicion.

Wacker
Explanation:
Is a tool manufacturer's brand name. I have drilled many thousands of metres of core using the Wacker. As your text already explains, it is a kind of specially designed compressed air hammer for driving coring equipment into the ground.

Many thanks! No idea why it's referred to as "sogenannt", I guess that's what threw me.
