German term or phrase: vertont
This comes from a map of an oil extraction area of sandstone in Germany and the only context available is as follows:

Valendis Lagerstaetten
Valendis Aquifer
Valendis vertont

All three of these are sections depicted by different patterns on the map. Lagerstaetten are deposits and Aquifer is an aquifer (obviously).

The only word I can find for vertonen means to set to music, so if anyone is aware of a more technical definition, please let me know.

Here it's just clayey and refers to primary conditions of sedimentation.
