German term or phrase: Positionierung
From a description of the activities of an international organisation:-

Wir unterstützen bei Entwicklung, Umsetzung und Evaluierung gemeinsamer regionaler Politiken und Strategien. Dies schließt auch die regionale Positionierung in internationalen Verhandlungen, z.B. der Umweltkonventionen, mit ein.

Before lots of people rush to say that the translation of "Positionierung" is "positioning", can someone explain what it actually means in this context? Does it means something like "ensuring that the region's interests/point of view is/are represented in international negotiations"? Or something else?

positioning
Explanation:
In my view, they are referring to the importance of the organisation, in an internationally context. not sure if this is the way to explain it though, but this is how I understand it.

On second thoughts, maybe role would be better

Thanks for everyone's comments, which really just confirmed my view that this needs a verb that describes an ongoing process, not a static state. Deborah's comment was most in line with my own thinking. I still dislike "positioning" so shall write my way round it.

agree  Henry Schroeder: I agree, their position in negotiations, whether they're going to support an initiative or promote an investment, etc... Even more specifically what the position of the region should be in...
