Explanation:
Translation will depend on whereabouts in Germany the brewery is located.

The Federal Republic of Germany is divided into 16 major adminsitrative regions. The majority are called Bundesland, but two call themselves Freistaat: Freistaat Bayern and Freistaat Sachsen. This is only a name nowadays and does not mean that Bavaria and Saxony are free and independent states.

Okay, it must be BAVARIA in this instance, as you must be talking about Weihenstephan, the oldest brewerey in the world.

agree  Steffen Walter: There are actually three German Länder that are "Freistaaten" - your forgot to mention Thüringen (Thuringia). http://www.thueringen.de

Explanation:
Since the "Freistaat" is stressed, I assume that it must be either Bavaria or Saxony.

I quite deliberately did not write "free state" - I think this might only confuse foreigners. What's the difference between a 'state' and a 'free state' in Germany? Most Germans won't know.
