Mit Brief und Siegel freie Reichsstadt:

Seit dem 1. Juni 1646 haben es die Bremer schriftlich. An diesem Tag wurde in Linz an der Donau die Reichsunmittelbarkeit ihrer Stadt feierlich besiegelt mit schwungvoll gesetztem Namenszug bestätigte Kaiser Ferdinand III. den Bremer Bürgern damals schwarz auf weiß nur "Uns und dem Heiligen Reich allein und ohne Mittlerstelle unterthan zu sein. Damit gab der Monarch den Hanseaten Brief und Siegel darauf den Status einer freien Reichsstadt zu besitzen - verpflichtet zwar dem Kaiser, doch unabhängig von der Regierungsgewalt des Erzbischofs als Landesherrn.
