German term or phrase: alten Keltenhochburg
This is perhaps a history question as much as anything else. This term, used in this case to describe the Salzkammergut region of Austria, was translated as "formerly Celtic region." Since the Celtic influence there was so long ago (and you really do learn something new every day -- I had no idea about that), wouldn't it be more accurate and less confusing to say something like "ancient Celtic stronghold"? Thanks in advance. Context:

"In dieser alten Keltenhochburg [i.e., Salzkammergut] wurde K. auch beerdigt, und es ist ein Treppenwitz der magischen Weltgeschichte, dass er in einem katholischen Grab ruht..."

ancient Celtic stronghold
Explanation:
You are absolutely correct. I wouldn't translate it any other way. A concentration of Celtic traditions in the region; a center of Celtic culture

disagree  Steffen Walter: No. The asker explicitly stated that the German term was used to refer to the Salzkammergut ***region***. How can a region be a "citadel"?

-> then it must be the bastion, which was mentioned as well
